Causative Verbs - English

Holaaaa!

I hope you all survived the summer and that you're rejoicing in the glorious return to school (and the promise of cooler temperatures in Bogor, even I don't think it will be always colder than my home in the night) . I say I won't be blogging much this summer. But this was too funny not to write about, and why am I here? It's all about the request from my lovey dovey friend, Causative Verbs. how could I rarely post any posting, and once I make a posting it's about the school lesson while it's in the long holiday??!

Voila! This is the 'Causative Verbs' @renw13 ;)

What is it?
The causative verbs are used to indicate that one person causes a second person to do something for the first person.

What are the verbs?
Have, get, and make.

How about force, let, permit, allow, and help?
force is included to make theory. Let, permit, allow and help, are not actually causative, but are are generally considered with causative verbs in grammar textbooks.

And here is the explanation~

1. Have
1st rule (active form)    : subject +  have + complement + [verb in simple form]
*notes: if there are any auxiliaries in the active sentence, place them immediately after the subject agreeing in number with the subject, the 'have' is in any tense, the complement is usually (a) person
example:
-The editors have the contributors attend a composition workshop.
-The president had his advisors arrange a press conference.
-John is having his mother contact the officials.
-Rully has had a friend type all of her papers.

2nd rule (passive form): subject + have + complement + [verb in past participle]
*notes: if there are any auxiliaries in the active sentence, place them immediately after the subject agreeing in number with the subject, the complement is usually (a)  thing
example:
-Reni has his shirts cleaned at the drycleaners.
-Eli was having his hair cut Reni called.

2. Get
1st rule (active form)    : subject +  get + complement + [verb in infinitive]
*notes: if there are any auxiliaries in the active sentence, place them immediately after the subject agreeing in number with the subject, the 'get' is in any tense, the complement is usually (a) person
example:
-Lusi got his cat to bring her the ribbon
-She is getting her teachers to give her a make-up exam

2nd rule (passive form): subject + get + complement + [verb in past participle]
*notes: if there are any auxiliaries in the active sentence, place them immediately after the subject agreeing in number with the subject, the complement is usually (a)  thing
example:
-Tia got her paper typed by a friend

3. Make
also means force, stronger than have and get
rule: subject + make + complement + [verb in simple form]
*note: the 'make' is in any tense
example:
-The robber made the teller give him the money
-The president is making his cabinet members sign this document

force's rule: subject + force + complement + [verb in infinitive]
*note: the 'force' is in any tense
example:
- The robber forced the teller to give him the money

4. Let
also means permit or allow
rule: subject + let + complement + [verb in simple form]
example:
-The teacher let the students leave class early
-Dr. Meily is letting the students hand in the papers on Monday
-We are going to let her go on August 15th
permit's and allow's rule: subject + permit/allow + complement + [verb in infinitive]
example:
-John allowed his daughter to swim with her friends
-John permitted his daughter to swim with her friends

5. Help
It means assist, is usually followed by the simple form, but can be followed by the infinitive in some cases.
rule: subject + help + complement + [verb in simple form]/[verb in infinitive]
example:
-He helps me stop the rain
-Raka helped the old woman with the packages (to) find an angkot.

And here is an exercise~
*I take it from my old books when I was in the elementary school

Use the correct form of the verb in the bracket in each of the following sentences.
1. Ara had her car ___________ (repair) by a mechanic.
2. Sonya is getting her hair ___________ (cut) tomorrow.
3. We will have to get the Dean ____________ (sign) this form.
4. Adam got his book ____________ (published) by a subsidy publisher.
5. The teacher let Al ____________ (leave) the classroom.
6. Rio made Aziz ____________ (leave) the room.

That's all I knew from any old books of mine and the knowledge that my teachers gave to me :')
Sorry for any mistakes, I really appreciate for your comment if any correction for the mistakes in this post.
